Sustainable Economic Development
The Special Area Management Plan recognizes that one of the keys to conservation of the Dragon Run Watershed is the preservation of the traditional uses in the watershed, including agriculture, silviculture, hunting, fishing, etc. To promote these traditional uses, a study was conducted to identify potential opportunities for sustainable natural resource-based economic development in the watershed.
One of the recommendations highligted by the study is to create a partnership to encourage the utilization of locally-grown soybeans in the biodiesel of municipal school bus fleets. This effort would provide a boost to the local soybean market while also promoting alternative fuels. For more information about the progress of this initiative, please visit the Dragon Run Biodiesel Project site.
