Bacon's Rebellion

Nathaniel Bacon

In 1676, frustrated with a declining economic situation, indian attacks, perceived government favoritism, Nathaniel Bacon and his followers led an insurrection against the colonial government controlled by Governor Sir William Berkley.

Governor William Berkley

On two separate occasions in July and September of 1676, Governor Berkley was driven from Jamestown by Bacon's forces. Jamestown was burned by Bacon on September 19, 1676. With Bacon's sudden death from natural causes on October 26, 1676, the insurrection lost momentum and Governor Berkley was once again able to establish control over the colony.
